It’s one of those lesser known nutrients, but of course, it’s equally as important as everything else, just for different reasons. We all know the body is a delicate balance, so why do we concentrate on certains ingredients and not others?

Let’s take a minute to appreciate fiber.

Use by, Sell by, Best before, What’s the difference?

So many people get confused by the dates on products from supermarkets. I remember my mother telling me that the number in brackets after the date, was how long you could use it after that date, example:

12/03/10 (2)

in actual fact, the (2) means supermarkets have to sell that product or take it off their shelves 2 days before that date.

so what else is there? Do you know the difference between “Use by” “Best Before” and “Sell By” ? which ones are still safe to eat/drink after the date has passed? In some cases, even if a “use by” date has passed, the food is still good for a few days or even weeks (eggs for example).

We all know the power of advertising,  I know how many times I used to watch an old McDonald’s advert and think “Now THAT sounds like a good idea” or even simply glancing the famous golden arches in the street made me crave from time to time.  I think advertising and association are the Achilles heel of many weight loss enthusiasts worldwide!

In my experience, people wishing to lose weight struggle the most in the first few days when their bodies are craving the junk food they have become used to, and everywhere they look they see advertising that they subconsciously associate with pleasure!

I never realised until recently reading Tony Robbins “Awaken The Giant Within” ( A truly inspirational read!) that our brains actually create physical neural paths connecting certain images/ideas with pleasure.

Not wanting to go into the ins and outs of neuroscience too much (especially as I’m not qualified) a brief summary would help you understand my point.

The brain divides everything it experiences into either pain or pleasure.

Whenever we experience either pain or pleasure, the brain searches for the cause, and creates a PHYSICAL NEURAL STRAND related to that activity.

Each time we repeat that activity, the strand is strengthened.  (Hence the philosophy practice makes perfect)

Therefore, anything associated with that activity, imagery, taste, even thinking of that activity, can give us a feeling of pleasure!

Fortunately, by stopping the activity, the neural pathway can weaken, and eventually the urge to eat junk food, for example, will reduce.

Want to stop eating unhealthy food but hate the cravings and the feeling of pleasure you associate with said food?

Stopping is the first step! Over time, you will feel less emotion about junk food.  Don’t let your brain get in the way of your weight loss goals anymore :)

The Truth About Milk

Milk Milk Milk, we always hear the benefits of milk from a small age. Milk contains calcium,  calcium gives strong bones. So milk gives us strong bones right? Well…….no.  In Fact, Milk is damaging to our body.

Latest research shows that the old myth about milk is largely inaccurate, save for the essential milk we receive during breast feeding.

This website has some very enlightening facts, which I will summarise below.

  • In order to ingest Calcium, we need Magnesium. Milk is essentially devoid of Magnesium.
  • Studies have shown that the higher the intake of Dairy in a society, the higher the risk of Osteoporosis
  • Milk is heated, or pasteurized, in order to kill off the bad bacteria and other harmful substances. In the process, much of the good bacteria and nutrients are also destroyed and can clog up the areas in the intestine where the useful nutrients are absorbed
  • If you fed a baby cow pasteurized milk, it would die within two weeks

The list goes on.  Read the article in full for some shocking enlightenment.

This article is very good for highlighting the importance of calcium, but interestingly, the studies they use as an example were of people taking calcium tablets, and not milk, why? why do you think.
